They engage in rump-to-rump contact or genital touching involving hand or foot contact as a form of reassurance. The patterns of initiation align with their respective social structures: female bonobos and male chimpanzees are the primary initiators, reflecting the female-centric and male-alliance-centric natures of their societies. Both species use these contacts to navigate tense moments and repair relationships after agonistic behavior.

The research indicates a "significant overlap" in these patterns, suggesting that sociosexual behavior is a common tool used by both species during periods of social tension.
